Emperor’s Declaration

Although the Internet started out simply as an idea of Vannevar Bush (the MEMEX, 1945), and then as a small and pioneering US government project for scientists to share their research data with each other (ARPANET, 1969 ),  and then to the World Wide Web (thanks to Sir Tim Berners-Lee, WWW, 1991), it has now blossomed into a fully viable, well established and mature, virtual planet-wide society.

Traditionally the countries and peoples of planet earth have required at least a figurehead leader to encourage, guide and lead them.  Royalty in society has generally and traditionally been welcomed, revered and respected, (Whether they were actually actively involved in any government role or not).  Although the accepted importance of Royalty has waned or been diminished in many places, the quiet presence of a Royal Family is still in common practice over much of our planet.
Therefore, I hereby declare that this is the proper moment to apply this Royal tradition to the Internet! So, in keeping with this ancient earthly custom:

I officially claim the title and position of the Emperor of the Internet, effective October 31st, 2006, for life and forever.

As Emperor I will rule wisely and without prejudice.  I will interact as little as necessary with Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN – the current internet elected ruling body), and will stay well in the background of any of the day-to-day Internet business or governance, preferring instead to perform duties which will help disseminate the Internet’s positive influence and popularity, establish World Peace, establish an Asteroid Warning and Deterrance Agency, disseminate the true mechanism of Earth’s expansion through recent history, and the proper frame of reference for the study of planetary geology,  and occasionally issue Royal Internet Titles to deserving others, and of course make the Emperor’s Awards for Achievement and Shame. (Your suggestions are welcome.)
